The Muslim world is experiencing a paradoxical state. On one hand, Islam is spreading rapidly worldwide, with conversions and empowerment on the rise, particularly in politics. For instance, New York City has a significant Muslim population, and Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in the US. On the other hand, the Ummah faces numerous challenges, including Islamophobia worldwide, suffering in places like India and Gaza/Palestine, in addition to internal conflicts such as Saudi Arabia vs UAE.
The Answer is Iman in its true meaning
The answer to these challenges lies in understanding Al-Iman (faith) in its true sense. Allah reminds us that faith should be rooted in the heart, with actions reflecting its strength (Quran 14:24-25). Unfortunately, our Iman has become emotional, lacking firm roots and proven actions. Al-Hasan Al-Basri reminded:
“ليس الإيمان بالتمني ولا بالتحلي ولكن الإيمان ما وقر في القلب وصدقه العمل”
“Iman is not merely a wish (or a claim) nor is it mere decoration (or pretension), but it is that which settles in the heart and is verified by actions.”
In other words, true faith is not just a verbal claim or a superficial display, but it is a deep-seated conviction in the heart that manifests itself in one’s actions and deeds.
Rasulullah’s (SAW) Example
The Prophet exemplified individual and societal transformation through faith. In 13 years, he transformed individuals like Bilal and Umar, and in less than 10 years, he transformed Yathrib, a city which was full of wars and violence, into Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, a city with enlighten and civilized society built on a solid constitution (Madinah Charter) that promoted human dignity and justice for all.
Positive Impacts of Faith
Faith is not only sentiment and emotion in the hearts, but must have positive impacts in life. Here are some positive impacts of faith:
1. Shapes Mind and Heart: Faith guides us to understand our purpose in life, knowing our Creator, and basic human nature (fitrah). Faith answers life’s fundamental questions.
2. Mental State: Faith alleviates fear and sadness, offering peace and tranquility (Quran 2:38, 10:62). One of the modern world crisis.
3. Clarity about Life: Faith provides direction, reducing confusion and frustration in life.
4. Strength and Determination: Faith instills hope and a clear vision, with certainty of success in this life or the hereafter (Quran 5:35).
5. Responsibility: Faith teaches us that life is an amanah (trust), promoting accountability and responsibility.
Societal Impact
Faith can transform societies, as seen in Quran 7:96. When communities prioritize faith and piety, they experience barakah (blessings) and prosperity.
Conclusion
The Ummah needs healing, suffering from a sickness that threatens to consume it. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) reminded us centuries ago: “The nations are about to call each other to attack you (Muslims) just as people are invited to eat from a dish.” They (the Sahabah) asked, “Will it be because of our small number on that day?” He (Prophet Muhammad) replied, “No, rather you will be many on that day, but you will be like the foam on the surface of water, and Allah will remove the fear from the hearts of your enemies and will put Wahn in your hearts.” They asked, “What is Wahn, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied, “Love of the world and hatred of death.” (Abu Dawood)
Let’s return to the true understanding of Iman (faith) as exemplified by Rasulullah, and work towards individual and societal transformation to bring positive change to ourselves and the world.
Happy Wednesday to all!
